Gentlemen of the Road

For numberless years a myna had astounded travelers to the caravansary with its ability to spew indecencies in 10 languages, and before the fight broke out everyone assumed the old blue-tongued devil on its perch by the fireplace was the one who maligned the giant African with such foulness and verve. Engrossed in the study of a small ivory shatranj board with pieces of ebony and horn, and in the stew of chickpeas, carrots, dried lemons and mutton for which the caravansary was renowned, the African held the place nearest the fire, his broad back to the bird, with a view of the doors and the window with its shutters thrown open to the blue dusk. On this temperate autumn evening in the kingdom of Arran in the eastern foothills of the Caucasus, it was only the two natives of burning jungles, the African and the myna, who sought to warm their bones. The precise origin of the African remained a mystery. In his quilted gray bambakion with its frayed hood, worn over a ragged white tunic, there was a hint of former service in the armies of Byzantium, while the brass eyelets on the straps of his buskins suggested a sojourn in the West. No one had hazarded to discover whether the speech of the known empires, khanates, emirates, hordes and kingdoms was intelligible to him. With his skin that was lustrous as the tarnish on a copper kettle, and his eyes womanly as a camel’s, and his shining pate with its ruff of wool whose silver hue implied a seniority attained only by the most hardened men, and above all with the air of stillness that trumpeted his murderous nature to all but the greenest travelers on this minor spur of the Silk Road, the African appeared neither to invite nor to promise to tolerate questions. Among the travelers at the caravansary there was a moment of admiration, therefore, for the bird’s temerity when it seemed to declare, in its excellent Greek, that the African consumed his food in just the carrion-scarfing way one might expect of the bastard offspring of a bald-pated vulture and a Barbary ape.

Vergolazos

Con sencillez Molotov creo una canción que en la que unió dos deportes nacionales: el futbol y el albur. Leía que el video tenía el objetivo de promocionar las transmisiones de futbol de Televisa Deportes y que no salió al aire porque a última hora se dieron cuenta que Vergolazos era un enorme albur. Pero al estar ya en YouTube y ventilado en Reforma parece más bien que es una promoción, pero por medios distintos a los convencionales. El doble sentido así sería completo.

Chabon en el New York Times Magazine

Gana Rossi el Villaurrutia

Con su primera novela "Edén", el escritor y filósofo Alejandro Rossi se hizo acreedor al Premio Xavier Villaurrutia 2006.

"Fue para mí una magnífica sorpresa. Estoy muy satisfecho por muchas razones, por el premio en sí mismo, y por su abolengo literario en México, ya que ha sido otorgado a lo más representativo de la literatura mexicana", manifestó Rossi desde Puerto Vallarta.

El jurado del galardón, formado por Christopher Domínguez, Juan Villoro y José Luis Rivas, destacó la manera en que el escritor "despliega en forma entrañable y minuciosa los ritos de paso de la primera infancia y pone en escena las curiosas circunstancias en que la vida privada refleja los sucesos públicos".

Fallece Ryszard Kapuscinski

El destacado escritor y reportero polaco Ryszard Kapuscinski ha fallecido hoy en Varsovia, a los 75 años de edad. El escritor, que sufría de una grave enfermedad, fue sometido a una complicada operación el pasado sábado.

Sorpresiva noticia de medianoche

Poco antes de la media noche, los periódicos El Universal (23:49) y Reforma (23:59) revelaron la extradición a Estados Unidos de importantes capos de la droga, entre otros delincuentes. La lista es impresionante, ya que incluye a Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, Gilberto Higuera, 'El Guero Gil'; Ismael Higuera Guerrero, alias 'El Mayel' y Héctor Palma Salazar, alias 'El Guero Palma', del Cártel del 'Chapo' Guzmán.

La nota del Universal es la siguiente:

México entregó en extradición a Estados Unidos a diez de los principales capos de las drogas y a otros cinco delincuentes buscados por la justicia de ese país.
La lista está encabezada por el líder del Cártel del Golfo, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén; por Gilberto Higuera, 'El Guero Gil', del Cártel de los Arellano Félix; Ismael Higuera Guerrero, alias 'El Mayel', también del Cártel de los Arellano, así como por Héctor Palma Salazar, alias 'El Guero Palma', del Cártel del 'Chapo' Guzmán.

A través de un comunicado, la Procuraduría General de la República informó que se dio cumplimiento al Tratado de Extradición entre el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos y el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos de América, por lo que se procedió a entregar en extradición a las siguientes personas:

Las personas señaladas agotaron el juicio de amparo a que tienen derecho y, en todos los casos, les fue negada en sentencia definitiva la protección de la justicia federal en virtud que la extradición concedida se encuentra estrictamente apegada a derecho, apunta la PGR.

En consecuencia, este día se realizó su traslado hacia el territorio de los Estados Unidos de América, en cumplimiento de las resoluciones del Poder Judicial.


Los ahora extraditados Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, Gilberto Higuera Guerrero, Ismael Higuera Guerrero, Héctor Palma Salazar, José Alberto Marquez Esqueda o Francisco Javier Moreno Molinas, Saul Saucedo Chaides, Gilberto Salinas Doria o Gilberto Garza García y Miguel Ángel Arriola Márquez, son líderes de organizaciones criminales dedicadas al narcotráfico que han generado en México una ola de violencia y descomposición social, además de lesionar la salud de miles de mexicanos, al hacerlos presos de la farmacodependencia, subraya la Procuraduría.

Fuentes diplomáticas del vecino país dijeron a REFORMA que la medida era "un hecho sin precedente" que respondía a una petición hecha al Gobierno de Felipe Calderón desde que fue reconocido como Presidente.

El 30 de octubre pasado, el Secretario de Seguridad Interna de Estados Unidos, Michael Chertoff, informó que incrementarían la información de inteligencia binacional con el fin de acelerar las extradiciones de capos solicitados por Washington.

Sonic Youth have announced their first dates for 2007, including a February run through the Northeast toting Wooden Wand in support. Shows are in Northampton, New Haven, New York, Providence, and Burlington, VT. Afterwards, the band repairs to Mexico for dates in Guadalajara and Mexico City. In April, SY travel to Japan for three shows.

La pregunta se la plantea Dulce Pinzón, responsable de un proyecto fotográfico, cuyo propósito es mostrar a trabajadores inmigrantes, hombres y mujeres, que sin poderes sobrehumanos realizan todos los días labores extenuantes en Nueva York.

Bush en 60 Minutes

Hubo algunas cosas que me sorprendieron durante la entrevista que le hizo Scott Pelley al presidente de Estados Unidos, George W. Bush, durante el programa de ayer de 60 Minutes. Primero que nada, me llamó la atención que Bush se mostrara completamente centrado sobre el hecho de que su presidencia, como dicen los estadounidenses, se encuentra en la línea. La imagen de un hombre no preparado para el cargo, a veces ignorante, pero simpre bromista quedó atrás. Se le nota debilitado, pero claro sobre el papel que ha desempeñado y las dificultades que tiene por delante.

- Dijo que entendía que E.U. lo ve como un presidente terco al que le falló la estrategia en Irak.

- Dijo que sabía bien que había mucha gente que sentía qu el presidente la engañó con tal de invadir Irak, se mostró filosófico y trató de salirse de ese tema diciendo que hubo hechos que sorprendieron a la opinión pública tanto como a él.

- Se negó a decir que Muqtada al- Sader, quien podría tomar el poder en Iraq, sea enemigo de Estados Unidos, aunque pareció acorralado por la pregunta.


- Deslizó el hecho de que los demócratas no tienen planes alternativos para Irak.

- Dijo que vio la video de la ejecución de Saddam Hussein como cualquier otro: en Internet y lamento que se rebajara sólo a un acto de venganza.

-También dijo ue leyó un libro sobre la ocupación francesa de Argelia que puede equipararse con el epidodio Iraquí.

Son algunas cosas que se pyeden rascar de la entrevista que en terminos generales fue bastante convencional.

Tras ller una larga lista de los libros que saldrán en 2007 y The Guardian recomienda, los más llamativos me parecieron los siguientes (en este orden):

El fallecido jugador de los Broncos de Denver Darrent Williams tenía una empresa llamada Ryno Entertainment, destinada prmocionar grupos de hip-hop.

La compañía de Williams y estaba a punto de lanzar al mercado el disco de un grupo de Fort Worth, Texas, llamado Billion Dolla Scholars.



Según algunas versiones, la noche de su asesinato, Williams presentó en el Club donde se encontraba a su banda y se dio altercado. Ese pudo ser el detonador para que horas después dispararn contra la limusina del jugador de futbol americano. Llama la atención que ya descubrieron el vehículo desde donde posiblemente abrieron fuego en su contra. El SUV es propiedad de un hombre que se encuentra encarcelado y no ha querido declarar sobre el caso: Brian Hicks, un pandillero de Denver. Paradójicamente, Hicks es también agente de ventas registrado de una disquera de grupos de Hip-hop: Boss Money Records.

Todo esto me recuerda la película "Hustle & Flow", estelarizada por Terrance Howard. Actualmente se filosofa mucho en Denver sobre la cultura del hip-hop, pero me parece que es difícil condenar a esa cultura y a sus elementos de violencia, sobre todo, porque esos factores tienen que ver con otras dinámicas sociales y no a los versos de alguien y a la parafernalia que lo rodea.

Two more copycat hangings of young people have occurred in the wake of the widespread broadcasts of the Saddam hanging video on cable and satellite television, and the entire video on such outlets as YouTube. In Texas, Sergio Pelico, 10, was found Sunday, December 31, 2006, dead from hanging from his bunk bed in an apparent copycat of the Saddam death. In India, early on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, Moon Moon Karmarkar, 15, hanged herself from a ceiling fan.

It’s hard not to think of the Bush administration when thumbing through the latest “The Amazing Spider-Man” comic (#536).
First, some background (and you probably don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see the parallels): In Marvel Comics’ — ahem — “Civil War” story arc, the U.S. government passes the “Superhuman Registration Act” after hundreds of innocent American men, women and children become collateral damage in a superhero-related tragedy (the president of the United States even swings by the disaster site to assess the damage). The act mandates registration of all superheroes with the government. Spider-Man initially supports the act but then grows suspicious after discovering that unregistered captives are being held without civil rights at an off-shore prison called “the Negative Zone” (oh, and the prison was built with a no-bid contract). Detainees will remain there for life if they don’t register.
Now, to the present: In this latest Spider-Man comic, America’s favorite swinging web-slinger takes to New York City’s airwaves to publicly denounce the act.
“I’ve seen the very concept of justice destroyed,” Spidey begins (as written by J. Michael Straczynski). “I’ve seen heroes and bad guys alike — dangerous guys, no mistake, but still born in this country for the most part, denied due process, and imprisoned, potentially for the rest of their lives. … But there’s a point where the ends don’t justify the means, if the means require us to give up not just our identities, but who and what we are as a country.”
David Cassel, a Spider-Man fan and editor of 10zenmonkeys.com, said in response, “In thirty years of reading Spider-Man, I’ve never seen an attack so direct.”
No word yet if the Bush administration is actively courting the Batman vote in response.

FERNDALE, Mich. (AP)-- A man who has a history of smashing windows to indulge his fetish for female mannequins could draw a long prison term for his latest arrest. Ronald A. Dotson, 39, of Detroit faces up to life in prison if convicted of a charge of attempted breaking and entering at a cleaning-supply company in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale.
The potential life sentence is because prosecutors charged him as a habitual offender. Authorities say he has at least six convictions for breaking and entering and a stint in state prison over the last 13 years.

Ferndale District Judge Joseph Longo ordered Dotson to stand trial following a preliminary examination on Thursday, The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak reported. The judge ordered him jailed unless he posts a $15,000 bond.
Dotson was arrested Oct. 9 after police say he smashed a window at a cleaning-supply company to get at a female mannequin dressed in a black and white French maid's uniform. He had been out of prison for less than a week.
Dotson was arrested in Ferndale in July 2000 and later convicted for breaking and entering at a women's clothing shop to get at a mannequin in a pink dress with bobbed hair.
Ferndale police also arrested Dotson in 1993 after finding him in an alley behind a woman's store with three lingerie-clad mannequins. He also has similar convictions in Detroit and suburban Oak Park.

Ayer vi el juego en el que los Broncos de Denver (mi equipo favorito) quedaba fuera de los playoffs al ser derrotados por los 49´s de San Francisco. La derrota se consumó en tiempo extra y fue un momento decepcionante, aun así una imagen que se me quedó muy grabada fue la alegría de Darrent Williams tras uno de los momentos brillantes del partido: una intercepción devuelta a anotación por parte de Champ Bailey. En la banda, Williams felicitaba a Bailey y se le veía contento por la acción. Hoy por la mañana, abrí la página web de CNN y me enteré que anoche Williams (a quien en alguna ocasión escuché que lo apodaban D-Will) fue asesinado durante un tiroteo en Colorado.
